Lack of Cybersecurity Experts

Lack of Cybersecurity Experts

Many people in the industry complain about the lack of adequately trained people in cybersecurity. But is this the case? A deeper look into the problem can give us better insights. The industry generally prefers people with a degree in a relevant field or at least a certification. Here lies the problem.

A lot of people who are experts in this domain don’t even bother to get a degree. As long as corporates don’t change the nature of their recruitment process, it would be difficult for them to grab good talent from the market. The recruitment process should focus on the fundamental question-and-answer interviews and instead seek the candidates’ portfolios. Various queries could be made based upon this, like their participation in many conferences, tools prepared by them, codes uploaded by them in GitHub, and their activeness in open source projects. A good case study can also be given to them to check their basic understanding and approach to problem-solving. Also, such activities hint at whether they would be a fit for the company or not.

Cross-training employees from other IT departments can also benefit companies rather than searching for already experienced people from the same domain. For example, a network engineer working with firewalls and DDoS protection can be cross-trained for a security engineer role. A finance person working in auditing can be a good match for a governance role. So, a lot of talent is out there in the market. By changing the strategy for hiring, companies can bring onboard desirable people into the proper posts.
